Romance novels, which are abundant today, started only being written around 300 to 400 years ago. Before such texts, people mostly wrote about their search for God.
When various kinds of technology emerged, people started travelling and communicating more, and increasingly lost their inner voice.
They then paid more and more attention to connections between people, especially those between men and women. Until that time, there were no novels, novellas or genres where romance was a leading topic. It all started around Shakespeare’s time and beyond.
Kabbalistic texts never delved into such topics. King David’s “Song of Songs,” for instance, is all about love, but it is about a person’s love for the Creator, a genuine form of love that extends from the soul to the source of the soul—the upper force of love, bestowal and connection that is the Creator.
