The current school system reflects a broader mismatch between education and the needs of modern children, families, and society. The traditional model of schooling no longer aligns with contemporary life. It was designed for a different era—one of industrialization, rigid structures, and standardized outcomes. That era ended long ago, yet we persist in clinging to its remnants.
Today, the world has changed, and so must our approach to education. Technology has advanced to the point where learning can be individualized, facilitated by computers and small, focused groups. The outdated practice of funneling children into professions they neither need nor desire, only to leave them facing unemployment and disillusionment, has run its course.
The traditional school system is no longer relevant. It is an experiment from around 150 years ago that has outlived its objectives. Moreover, continuing the same school system while modern life and needs change further degrades the schooling system. It is then likely to give rise to a barbaric society. The solution is not to reform the old system but to replace it entirely. This requires us to rethink education from the ground up, focusing on what is genuinely beneficial for our children and for society in general.
We have the resources and the intelligence to create a better system. But doing so requires shifting our priorities. Instead of inventing unnecessary professions and perpetuating a cycle of unproductive labor, we need to instead dedicate our efforts to studying and supporting the changing needs of the next generation.
This new approach to education should prioritize understanding human nature, the surrounding world, and the principles of harmonious coexistence. Children should not be pressured into rigid structures or force-fed information. Instead, they should be encouraged to explore, discover, and choose content that resonates with their innate curiosity.
The primary goal of education should be to raise happy human beings, which comes from teaching them how to interact in mutually considerate, supportive, beneficial, and generally positive ways. This means developing an integral understanding of life, where all aspects of existence are balanced and harmonious.
Ultimately, the most important “profession” is learning how to live in alignment with nature, society, and the purpose of existence. Achieving this balance should be the main focus of education—and it is where our attention should shift without delay in order to make an impactful shift to a much better world.
