It is not that the universe is indifferent. There is an law of interconnection and interdependence that exists in the universe, and if we do not realize its positive use, we will destroy each other, and the universe has nothing to regret.
There is no mercy here on the universe’s behalf. If we observe the inanimate, vegetative and animate levels of nature, we do not see any particular mercy at play. As humans, our worst trait is that we invent the existence around us and our future in a way that we desire for ourselves. In such a way, we violently demand “Give it to me!” from the universe.
If we were to reason soberly about the universe, then we would not demand from it. We would rather demand from ourselves, that we develop a considerate, respectful and supportive attitude to each other, nature and the universe. We might then be able to understand how the universe’s laws operate and how we can rise above ourselves in order to match those laws.
We thus should not demand from the universe, “Be merciful to me,” but to demand from ourselves, “Be merciful to others.” We would be wise to exercise a good and kind attitude toward others, as we would like to wish for ourselves, without picturing all kinds of rewards for ourselves in the process. If we start moving in such a way, we will then be on course toward reaching balance with the universe. A life of harmony and peace will then replace the current tendency that is headed to increasing suffering and destruction.
