I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the 50 people who were killed in last night’s shooting in Las Vegas.
Unfortunately, I don’t think such horrible events will vanish from the horizon anytime soon. We have to see the pattern underlying them: Many people feel like their lives are not worth living, and they’re getting no “vaccinations” against committing such acts.
These senseless acts are consequences of the social climate that bred them. The only way to avert them is through a consistent, massive socio-educational endeavor to positively influence people with new values. The only force that will prevent the next shooter from pulling the trigger is a powerful sense of interdependence and an appreciation of connection with others.
