What Compliment Do You Think People Should Hear Today?

We live in a world where people are readily caught up in their own affairs, mostly forgetting to acknowledge one another. A kind word, a sincere expression of appreciation, can seem small, yet it impacts people. But why is it so important for us to hear compliments?

Because we are egoists. Egoism is human nature. We all desire to hear good things about ourselves because it gives us pleasure, reinforces our self-worth, and boosts our sense of importance. Conversely, when we hear something negative about us, it pokes at our ego and hurts us.

A compliment is a form of reward. When we receive one, we can then feel inclined to respond kindly: to be more open, to reciprocate, and to act favorably. This is simply how our egoism operates.

However, if we have a higher goal in life, which we are confident in achieving and which we fully commit ourselves to, then whether others speak well or poorly of us has no impact. Our direction is then set, and external opinions do not sway us. We then seek something much higher than other people’s approval.

In today’s world, which is characterized by an overblown human ego, most compliments are unauthentic and transactional, given with an expectation in return. They are part of the egoistic exchange that governs human relationships.

Instead of offering compliments for the sake of pleasing others, we would be wiser to focus on inspiring people toward a greater purpose. If we wish to truly do good to someone else, we do not do so through empty words of praise, but by helping them advance toward life’s meaning and purpose: to rise above egoism and enter into balance with nature’s laws of love, bestowal, and connection. There is nothing wrong with complimenting others, but for them to hold much more value than simply a transient boost in the person’s ego, then we should give compliments in a way that encourages the recipient’s progress to life’s ultimate goal.
