What Role Does Education Play in Promoting Peace and Preventing Conflict?

One of my students told me a story about a Korean woman who was flying from Seoul to California with her four-month-old baby. Before the flight, she handed out 200 small bags to all the passengers.

In the bags were earplugs, sweets, and a note:

“Hello, I am Junwoo, I am four months old, and I am flying to America with my mom and grandma. This is my first flight, and I might cry. My mom prepared candies and earplugs for you. Please use them if it gets too noisy because of me. Please do not be upset with me. Sorry, and thank you.”

The boy, Junwoo, ended up behaving wonderfully and slept for most of the flight.

We can indeed commend the Korean mother’s attitude. The main question is whether such a characteristic can be nurtured in a person, and should it be? It can and should be, but where are the teachers who would educate such an approach in people?

Indeed, developing such an approach to others on a wider scale depends on education. It requires learning to view the world from a perspective of not wanting to disturb others, rather than from a perspective of feeling disturbed. The latter is the way we are by nature: that we view from within our natural inborn egoistic quality that calculates self-benefit first and foremost.

If we strengthened such a trait on a wider scale of education, then we would see much less problems in our lives. Whether it is divorce on the family level, or wars on a national and international scale, at their basis is a failure of mutual understanding. If it were thus possible to implement the education of connection-enriching values on a broad scale, we would bear witness to a world of less divorces and wars.

I hope it would be so, but it requires a very serious investment of resources and money specifically in people and their education. But I think that we are headed to a state where there will be no other choice. The more humanity evolves, the more it suffers, and I think that suffering will lead us to a critical juncture where we will need to make an accurate calculation of how we exit our pain-increasing trajectory. It seems to me that we are in a transitional state right now where such a major change might happen. People need to be given an education of connection-enriching values so that they will feel the need to change themselves.
