First and foremost, King David was a Kabbalist, i.e., a person who received (“Kabbalah” from the word “Lekabbel” [“to receive”]) the perception and sensation of the upper force of love and bestowal. It is with this quality that he could be a king, a judge and also a military leader at a time when Israel was a spiritual society, i.e., a society that held the upper force of love and bestowal in its connections.
He is considered to be the basis of the spiritual structure of Israel. Therefore, the force that will come to correct humanity, i.e., to elevate humanity above the level of merely serving egoistic desires to a level where humanity gains the ability to love, bestow and positively connect, is considered King David’s descendent, the Messiah, son of David (Heb. “Moshiach ben David”). The word “Messiah” (“Moshiach”) comes from the word for “pulling” (“Limshoch”), i.e., a force that pulls us out of our egoistic desires and into the altruistic quality of the upper force of love and bestowal.
Kabbalists consider King David an expression of the spiritual quality of Malchut, which literally translates to “kingdom.” That is why he was called a “King of Israel.” Such a kingdom is not one that is held with power and force. It is rather a quality that fills human desires.
